Me refiero a Boxee.

No sabemos qué
Love Disney? If you answered yes, then I’ve got a couple of iPhone apps that you may want to bring along on your next trip amusement park hopping.
Disney World Wait Times (App Store, $0.99, pictured) - Think of this one as a crowdsourced cheat sheet that conveniently displays the wait times (in minutes) for all the major attractions in the four main Disney parks. Don’t forget to do your part and submit updated times when you’re in-park.

WDW Magic Kingdom Mini Guide (App Store, $0.99) – Map your exact location within Magic Kingdom via this helpful GPS-enabled app. I use this mostly for its maps, but it also includes brief descriptions of each attraction (including riding restrictions) and an icon for rides that accept FastPass. Basic dining info is also included but I rely on Disney World Dining (next) for that.

Disney World Dining (App Store, $1.99) - can be dicey. For example, did you know that there are are only four restaurants at Magic Kingdom that have full table service? It’s true, so either get this app, or get in the buffet line. You can also use it to review menus and maps. My recommendations for dinner are the Liberty Tree Tavern in Magic Kingdom and Biergarten in Epcot.

WDW Secrets Gold (App Store, $1.99) – Over 200 theme park secrets and fun facts are compiled into this app and organized into an interesting guided tour with pictures. Bonus: find the 80 hidden Mickeys.

Similar GPS-enabled map apps are also available for Hollywood Studios (formerly MGM), Animal Kingdom and DisneyLand, although I had trouble with the Epcot Mini Guide, the GPS kept flipping out and my location was erratic on-screen.

Bonus app: Before you leave for vacation I recommend that you also spring for Postage (App Store, $4.99) which allows you to create, email and share beautiful custom postcards using the iPhone’s camera.

Source Zdnet.com

Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08387893806467304224noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-36096963.post-89293217646478685862010-01-07T13:19:00.000-05:002010-01-07T13:21:22.877-05:00Steve Ballmer unveils the HP Slate tablet

Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer debuted the HP Slate tablet computer during the CES 2010 keynote address last night, and while it was only a teaser, there were a few details and pictures available.

During what might have been the highlight of last night’s speech (apparently not everyone was impressed), Ballmer hinted that we’ll be seeing a prototype some time later this year. (Seriously, there haven’t been enough definite release dates at CES this year.)

In what could have been a great debut (and steal Apple’s thunder before they ever come out with that darn tablet of their own), there weren’t many concrete details beyond that.

But what did the world learn about the HP Slate?

acebook is popping up in divorce cases as all those pokes, instant messages and high school flames catch up with folks with cheatin’ eyes, according to one rather unscientific story.
The Telegraph in the UK reports that Facebook is fueling divorce claims:

One law firm, which specialises in divorce, claimed almost one in five petitions they processed cited Facebook.

Mark Keenan, Managing Director of Divorce-Online said: “I had heard from my staff that there were a lot of people saying they had found out things about their partners on Facebook and I decided to see how prevalent it was I was really surprised to see 20 per cent of all the petitions containing references to Facebook.

“The most common reason seemed to be people having inappropriate sexual chats with people they were not supposed to.”

Now that statement has escalated into “research.” The Telegraph even calls it research—it’s one law firm scanning its database.

Let’s get real: You could substitute any technological advance for Facebook and write the same story. Rest assured that cell phones hit the scene and quickly became tied up in divorce proceedings. And texting has to have led to divorce. So has the Internet. I’m sure AOL was mentioned in a few cases too back in the day when it mattered.

Does Facebook have a greater role in divorces than Craigslist.com? How about Yahoo IM? There has to be flirting on IM somewhere. How about Google? If you’re going to do any real research you’d have to compare Facebook’s role in divorces compared to a site like AshleyMadison.com that facilitates affairs.

The point: If people are going to screw around they will. Facebook is just a tool that will ride shotgun along with a bevy of other Web properties. Now things may become a little more public on Facebook, but generally speaking the site can’t be considered the sole catalyst for divorce proceedings.

Fuente: Zdnet.

Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08387893806467304224noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-36096963.post-43647661868189725402009-12-17T18:35:00.001-05:002009-12-17T18:35:59.433-05:00Sony's Stringer says e-reader to stay a book device
NEW YORK (Reuters) - The way Howard Stringer sees it, Sony's digital e-readers should focus on the printed word and making reading "comfortable," even though the consumer electronics giant could turn it into a multimedia machine.

Stringer, Chief Executive of Japan's Sony Corp, admits there is a lot of "energy" behind Amazon.com's Kindle, which is seen as the leader in a burgeoning market for portable reading devices.

As speculation grows that Apple Inc may introduce a tablet-style computer that could also address the e-reader market, Sony could differentiate itself by adding more powerful chips, displays and media features to the pocket sized readers.

But Stringer says that, given the nascence of the market, it is smarter to wait and see how consumer warm to the current makeup of the devices.

"The consumer will tell us if this format is comfortable and helpful and convenient and all those things before you start plowing on a thousand apps," or making the "Vaio Reader" Stringer said on the sidelines of a press conference in New York on Thursday.

Sony, Amazon.com and Barnes & Noble Inc are in a heated fight over who will emerge with the best-selling electronic reading device, each beefing up their devices with exclusive content or high-tech features.

Sony struck a deal with News Corp on Thursday that will make The Wall Street Journal, MarketWatch and the New York Post available on its electronic reader, the latest shot fired in an intensifying battle with Amazon.com Inc's popular Kindle device.

Sony said subscriptions would be available shortly from its e-reader website, with monthly prices set at $14.99 for The Wall Street Journal, $10.99 for MarketWatch and $9.99 for the New York Post.

Rontohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11136400498779286636noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-36096963.post-34902377674446118672009-12-08T08:32:00.001-05:002009-12-08T08:32:13.943-05:00Archos 5 Internet Media Tablet

Rontohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11136400498779286636noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-36096963.post-51276512696942233092009-12-07T17:26:00.000-05:002009-12-07T17:29:29.306-05:00Delay in Barnes and Noble's Nook seen as setbackNEW YORK (Reuters) - Efforts by Barnes & Noble Inc to get its Nook electronic reader into customers' hands suffered another setback on Monday, when the bookseller said it was postponing the in-store debut of the device until early 2010 to fulfill orders already received.
Barnes & Noble said just eight days ago that it would ship the newly launched Nook to its highest-volume stores on December 7 to allow customers to buy an e-reader and take it home.
For now, only demonstration models are available in stores.
While analysts caution further delays could steer wavering e-reader buyers to rivals, such as the Kindle e-reader from Amazon.com and Sony Corp's Daily Edition device, they do not expect this latest snag to hurt Nook's market share in any lasting manner.
"You'll have some people thinking the Nook is the ideal holiday gift but they might look at a Kindle instead," said James McQuivey, a media analyst at Forrester Research.
But the Nook's unique features and the loyalty of Barnes & Noble customers will inure it against a backlash, he said.
Because the Nook allows users to download books from public libraries and from other sources, unlike the Kindle which only allows downloads from Amazon, customers are willing to wait, Gartner Vice President Allen Weiner said.
"The products are apples and oranges," said Weiner. "I don't know that the (Nook's) benefits have been marketed properly."
A spokeswoman for Barnes & Noble said the delays stemmed from high demand, not any production snafus.
"For all the pre-orders, we have a commitment to customers to fulfill those orders on a first-come, first-served basis so we decided to hold off providing inventory to the stores until after the holidays," spokeswoman Mary Ellen Keating said.
Keating declined to say how many pre-orders the company had received for the Nook or how many have been delivered.
Amazon said in November that the Kindle posted its best sales yet that month.
Barnes & Noble shares fell 62 cents, or 2.9 percent, to $20.99 early Monday afternoon.
PATIENT TO A POINT
Retail experts have said e-readers -- which allow readers to use light, tablet-like devices onto which digital copies of books, magazines and newspapers can be downloaded -- will be a hot gift item this year.
But patience with the Nook's woes could wear thin.
"You really can't afford many more delays, especially because next year it's going to heat up," McQuivey said, referring to a slew of e-readers expected to be introduced at next month's CES conference in Las Vegas hosted by the Consumer Electronics Association.
Barnes & Noble is not the only one struggling to meet demand. Last month Sony said heavy demand for the Daily Edition meant shipments could not be guaranteed in time for the holidays. Last holiday season, Amazon was dogged with similar supply issues.
Barnes & Noble, which launched its e-reader in late October, said last month that it had sold out of the Nook because of strong demand. It has been scrambling to get the $259 devices into the hands of customers who ordered them before November 20. The bookseller has said orders placed after that date will not be filled until January.
Barnes & Noble's Keating said the company would only disclose after the holidays how long it will need to work through its order backlog.
Borders Group Inc has not yet released its own e-reader but is expected to disclose its plans next month.
(Reporting by Phil Wahba; Editing by John Wallace and Richard Chang)

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Microsoft Corp is betting its next Windows operating system will be faster and easier to use and avoid the missteps of Windows Vista that alienated many users of the software that powers 90 percent of the world's PCs.
Windows 7, which was previewed on Tuesday, is set to be introduced in a test version early next year with features including touch screen technology and the ability to more easily personalize the system.
Windows Vista was so heavily criticized due to poor compatibility with devices and slow start speeds that it became the target of an effective marketing campaign by rival Apple Inc.
In addition, the usefulness of a traditional Windows desktop operating system, the world's largest software maker's most profitable product, is being challenged as more software applications move online, highlighting the central role of Internet browsers in a world centered on the Web.
Microsoft decided to measure success by a positive user experience versus technical superiority -- often overlooked by ordinary consumers.
Julie Larson-Green, a Microsoft corporate vice president in charge of overseeing the design of Windows 7, said: "It's fine to have the best technical solution. But just like VHS and Beta (Betamax), the best technical solution doesn't always matter," referring to the video format battles in the late 1970s and early 1980s.
The company also adopted a 'simple is better' philosophy, looking to remove complexity from an operating system that incorporated 50 million lines of programing code in Vista.
"The general perception is that Vista is a damaged brand, so it behooves Microsoft to move on to sell something new even if it's not a quantum leap in terms of technology," said Toan Tran, analyst at Morningstar.
SUCCESS DEFINED BY USERS
Microsoft plans to introduce more user-friendly features, such as a new taskbar that previews all the open windows from a single application by hovering over the program's icon.
Another new feature is called "Jump Lists," which provides updated lists of recently worked-on documents or often visited Web sites without first having to open Microsoft Word or an Internet browser.
"People aren't coming to Windows to use Windows. People are coming to Windows to get to what they want to do. Helping them get to what they want to do is the goal of the operating system," said Larson-Green.
Larson-Green came over from the Office group with Steven Sinofsky, who took over Windows development with a reputation as a disciplined task master with a focus on simplifying the user interface.
To keep the team focused, every Windows 7 engineer was handed a pamphlet of core principles with Zen-like slogans such as "reduce concepts, increase confidence," and "small bad and good things matter."
The new philosophy at Windows is a nod to the success of Apple, which has seen its U.S. market share double since 2005 due in part to an advertising campaign that has portrayed Vista as clunky and harder to use.

Microsoft has countered with a $300 million marketing blitz featuring comedian Jerry Seinfeld, rapper Pharrell Williams, writer Deepak Chopra and Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates, looking to emphasize the reach and diversity of Windows users.
Windows Vista has sold more than 180 million licenses since its launch in January 2007, but Microsoft executives have said privately that the software over-promised and under-delivered, a problem that they say will not be repeated with Windows 7.
Windows 7 aims to keep hardware requirements in line with that of Vista so that companies do not need to buy special machines to run the new operating system.
Microsoft said it has also solved the compatibility problem with devices that plagued Vista at its launch with a new feature called Device Stage, a one-stop point to manage and gather information for devices from mobile phones to printers to digital music players.
Shares of Microsoft rose $1.06, or 5 percent, to $22.24 in afternoon Nasdaq trade.

Fuente: Wired.
Fuente: Diario TIAnonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08387893806467304224noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-36096963.post-41996707620472643712008-08-05T12:52:00.002-04:002008-08-05T12:52:54.920-04:00Midori: The "Post" Windows OS?The big excitement in Microsoftland this week has been further news of Midori. Midori is claimed to be Microsoft's "post-Windows" operating system—a new platform for the future. The SD Times claims to have seen internal Microsoft documents describing the company's plans for the new OS, and it says that Midori will be a commercial derivative of the Singularity project. Say hello to a cloud-computing-ready .NET OS.
Related Stories
Midori: a non-Windows OS in the works, not just experimental
Dreaming in the cloud
Singularity's big feature is that it is written in managed code. While Midori looks to follow suit, it is also written for a cloud computing world. Microsoft has already spoken of its plans for cloud computing; in particular, the company plans to introduce tools to enable cloud computing applications to be written as easily as normal applications are today. Midori will offer the same; the Midori platform will give developers the basic tools to write applications that can be run in massive parallel and that can withstand unreliable communications.
Parallelism is, of course, a key constraint for future software. Constrained by escalating power consumption, CPU vendors are no longer giving developers "free" single-threaded performance, but multiple cores instead. Though single-threaded performance is still making modest improvements, they're small compared to the potential improvement seen in going from two to four to eight or more cores.
Cloud computing provides immediate access not just to a handful of cores, but to hundreds or thousands. Cloud computing also introduces unreliability; network connections can become slow or go down completely, so cloud software must be built to tolerate this, for example by retrying jobs performed on CPUs that have become unavailable.
Why they named it after bright green booze, I have no idea
Problem one: compatibility
Midori is also claimed to offer an upgrade path from current Windows. As well as running directly on hardware like a normal OS, Midori will be able to run under the Hyper-V hypervisor, coexisting side-by-side with Windows and Linux. It can also be run as a process on a Windows machine.
Initially, then, Midori might work as just another Windows program used for cloud applications. As Midori applications become more abundant and can be used for more day-to-day computing tasks, it can run as a complete OS under Hyper-V, so the machine would be shared between a (legacy) Windows virtual machine and a (new and shiny) Midori VM. Further still into the future, as Windows applications become less and less necessary, Midori can be run as the sole OS on a machine, with the occasional Windows app relegated to a virtual machine.
It's clear that Microsoft needs a long-term plan for its OS. Although the company is still utterly dominant in the desktop operating system market, the future is murkier. In the short term, Microsoft cannot let the problems that plagued the development of Windows Vista recur. Mojave stunts aside, Vista has failed to win over consumers.
Perhaps more importantly, it failed to deliver what MS had planned for the release. The early software released to developers in 2003 used managed code far more extensively than Vista actually has; plagued with bugs and compatibility problems, virtually all of the managed code was eliminated from Vista.
Problem two: parallelism
Longer term, the shift to multicore processors (and eventually to massively multicore, with tens, hundreds, even thousands of processors) will need a significant change from both software developers and OS vendors alike. Parallel programming is complex at the best of times; traditional approaches to software development make the problem even worse.
For example, programs today typically depend on having a certain amount of information that is shared between different threads and, generally, that information can be updated. This is unproblematic in a single-threaded environment, but when multiple threads are used, the developer must ensure that no thread tries to use the information during an update.
This is done by locking and unlocking the shared data, and improper use of this locking is a common source of bugs in multithreaded programs. It is also a cause of performance problems, and is one of the reasons why a quad core processor is rarely four times faster than a single core processor.
A platform for the future
Microsoft's long-term operating system goals must address both of these problems; MS needs a platform that it can modify to address new needs without being hamstrung by compatibility. It also needs a platform that will make things as easy as possible for the increasingly parallel computers that are now inevitable. Although parallel programming will always require some input from the developer—the fundamental complexity of doing several things at once will never disappear, and there's no silver bullet—the system must make this as easy as possible.
Is Midori that long-term operating system? Well, it certainly does some of the things that a future Microsoft OS should do. The safety and portability of managed code would eliminate many of the security flaws that still regularly crop up in software. .NET already makes these bugs impossible; Singularity and Midori perform even greater analysis of software and prohibit even more bugs. To help address problems with parallel programming, Midori's programming model uses immutable data; immutable data can be shared without locks and so prevents lock-based bugs from ever occurring.
Another way in which Midori is engineered for high concurrency is through an asynchronous architecture. Current OSes are usually largely synchronous; that is, whenever software asks the OS to do something (read a file from disk, send data over a network, etc.) the software must wait until the OS has completed the action. With an asynchronous design, the OS returns control to the software immediately, allowing the software to do useful work while waiting for the OS to finish the operation it was asked for. When the operation is finished, the OS notifies the software.
Although sometimes the software has nothing to do until the operation is complete (if it needs to know what data is in a file before it can proceed, say), this is not universally true. For example, writing to a file is something that can often be done asynchronously. Allowing applications to keep running even when long-running operations are going on in the background, and using notifications when those operations are complete, can give asynchronous programming significant performance improvements over synchronous equivalents.
The downside is that asynchronous programming tends to be more complex than synchronous programming, because it often makes it difficult to tell which order the different parts of a program will run in; it makes the program's structure harder to see and understand. .NET provides good support for asynchronous programming already to try to reduce the inconvenience, and it is likely that Midori would have further improvements to make asynchronous development easier.
The ability to run Midori as a process on existing Windows systems is another strong point in its favor. This provides a clean migration path, allowing Midori applications to run alongside Windows applications, which is essential for any post-Windows OS.
Dead end or huge hit?
Although Midori has some compelling features for a "next" operating system, it's premature to proclaim it to be the post-Windows OS. Going to an all-new OS means sacrificing both the hardware and software support that Microsoft has been nurturing for the past 20 years, and that's a very high price to pay. The pain of losing the software can be mitigated by virtualization—Apple used a similar approach to support legacy Mac OS applications on Mac OS X—but hardware support is a bigger problem; the only way to support hardware in a new OS is to persuade hardware vendors to write new drivers. That's hard enough for a new version of Windows, let alone a whole new OS.
The current Windows code has also had a vast amount of real-world testing; though it's not perfect, it works well in a huge variety of configurations and workloads, and giving this up is sure to give Microsoft pause for thought.
Microsoft runs many software projects for research and experimentation purposes. Microsoft has formally admitted only that Midori is an "incubation project"—an internal project that may or may not result in an eventual commercial product. As such, Midori could be anything from a complete dead-end, to the OS 95 percent of the world will be running in five to ten years.
I suspect that the truth will lie somewhere in between; a future Microsoft OS will use virtualization to provide backwards compatibility, and that future OS will use managed code. Finally, the asynchronous, networked, fault-tolerant parts will materialize within the next year as part of Microsoft's cloud computing initiative—a software platform, libraries, and tools. Indeed, this cloud computing platform might be Midori.
Harder to believe is that these ideas will be combined to make the future OS, and that the future OS will be fundamentally designed for cloud computing. Microsoft might want—need—a new OS, but betting the farm on the clouds in the sky is a risky gamble.

Source: Arstechnica.com by Peter Bright.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08387893806467304224noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-36096963.post-57694861691489658782008-07-02T20:41:00.003-04:002008-07-02T20:50:08.262-04:00Bill Gates...
